About 'track a number free'|How Accessible Are You Why a Toll-Free Number is a Good Idea
We are living in an era where so much of the time, it seems we are our credit score. Credit checks are done not just for financing purchases, but for the necessities of life such as gaining employment, renting a house or apartment or even getting car insurance. Bad marks on the credit scores can not only be costly, resulting in higher interest rates and premiums, but can also limit one's opportunities in life. Compounding the problem is the fact that consumer credit files are notorious for containing mistakes and outdated information. Between concern over the economy and an increasing awareness of identity theft, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of keeping track of their credit scores and improving them wherever possible. One can barely click on the internet without offers popping up to enroll in paid crediting monitoring services or to pay a flat fee to see one's reports...and there are those constant cute television commercials with the strolling musicians hawking a certain free credit report website. A trip to that site will quickly reveal that of course they are looking to make money by selling services. What many people are not aware of is the fact that there may be no need for them to pay to see their own credit file and do repairs. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act all three major credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) are required to let consumers view their own files for free on an annual basis. Additionally, any time information in these files is used to deny insurance, housing, employment or reduce or deny credit, consumers are entitled to a free copy if they request it within sixty days of adverse action. By law, companies must give written notice of why an opportunity was denied - this notice will contain the name and contact information of the consumer credit reporting company whose information effected the decision. It's then a simple matter to contact the bureau and request a copy of your file. Generally, you can even go directly to their website and cite the company that denied you instead of even mailing a written request. When you receive your file (whether by mail or online), review it for errors yourself, again instead of paying a service to do this. In addition to the companies that charge you to monitor your credit, there are a myriad of others that offer to help clean up a less than desirable file for what is often a goodly amount of money. This is something that you can do yourself to the extent that it is legally possible (paid services cannot work miracles no matter what they tell you and how much you fork over to them). Anything they can do, you are allowed to do yourself for free. It is not a difficult or mysterious process. By law, adverse information stays on your credit report for seven years; adverse public record information such as bankruptcy, judgments and deliquent tax records will likely follow you for ten years but there are options that may help. You are entitled to dispute any bad or outdated information and ask that it be removed or updated, for example to show when a debt was paid in full regardless of its bad payment history. This is a simple process and you should receive instructions with your report. Once you file a simple dispute - it can be one sentence, such as "This is not my debt", it then becomes up to the credit bureau to do an investigation and verify that the information is correct. They usually have to do this within thirty days. Aside from obvious errors where a bad debt clearly belongs to a different Joe Smith with a different social security number or who owes the electric company a fortune in a state you've never even been to, it is sometimes possible to even get valid information removed. Since many debts are sold and resold, the verification may just not make it back to the bureau within the month and the bad marks may have to be removed (be aware, though that the same information may be reported again in the future). If you are unable to have an item or items removed through this process, you are always allowed to add an explanation to your file in your own words. This won't help raise your score, but it can make a difference to someone who really does want to extend you the credit or job offer. If you suffered some serious setback such as a divorce, serious illness or period of unemployment and simply couldn't make your payments on time (and are now on more solid ground), it never hurts to put a brief note in your file in your own defense. Failing all else, you can just note in your file that you disagree with an entry. In some cases, this will at least prompt a prospective landlord or creditor to ask you for your side of the story. The ultimate goal is to have your credit report reflect as well as possible on you since it is such an important part of everyday life. Source: Federal Trade Commission: www.ftc.gov/index.shtml |
