Compounding               the               problem               is               the               fact               that               consumer               credit               files               are               notorious               for               containing               mistakes               and               outdated               information.

Between               concern               over               the               economy               and               an               increasing               awareness               of               identity               theft,               more               and               more               people               are               becoming               aware               of               the               importance               of               keeping               track               of               their               credit               scores               and               improving               them               wherever               possible.

One               can               barely               click               on               the               internet               without               offers               popping               up               to               enroll               in               paid               crediting               monitoring               services               or               to               pay               a               flat               fee               to               see               one's               reports...and               there               are               those               constant               cute               television               commercials               with               the               strolling               musicians               hawking               a               certain               free               credit               report               website.

A               trip               to               that               site               will               quickly               reveal               that               of               course               they               are               looking               to               make               money               by               selling               services.

What               many               people               are               not               aware               of               is               the               fact               that               there               may               be               no               need               for               them               to               pay               to               see               their               own               credit               file               and               do               repairs.
               Under               the               Fair               Credit               Reporting               Act               all               three               major               credit               bureaus               (TransUnion,               Equifax               and               Experian)               are               required               to               let               consumers               view               their               own               files               for               free               on               an               annual               basis.

Additionally,               any               time               information               in               these               files               is               used               to               deny               insurance,               housing,               employment               or               reduce               or               deny               credit,               consumers               are               entitled               to               a               free               copy               if               they               request               it               within               sixty               days               of               adverse               action.

By               law,               companies               must               give               written               notice               of               why               an               opportunity               was               denied               -               this               notice               will               contain               the               name               and               contact               information               of               the               consumer               credit               reporting               company               whose               information               effected               the               decision.

It's               then               a               simple               matter               to               contact               the               bureau               and               request               a               copy               of               your               file.

Generally,               you               can               even               go               directly               to               their               website               and               cite               the               company               that               denied               you               instead               of               even               mailing               a               written               request.
               When               you               receive               your               file               (whether               by               mail               or               online),               review               it               for               errors               yourself,               again               instead               of               paying               a               service               to               do               this.

In               addition               to               the               companies               that               charge               you               to               monitor               your               credit,               there               are               a               myriad               of               others               that               offer               to               help               clean               up               a               less               than               desirable               file               for               what               is               often               a               goodly               amount               of               money.

This               is               something               that               you               can               do               yourself               to               the               extent               that               it               is               legally               possible               (paid               services               cannot               work               miracles               no               matter               what               they               tell               you               and               how               much               you               fork               over               to               them).

Anything               they               can               do,               you               are               allowed               to               do               yourself               for               free.

It               is               not               a               difficult               or               mysterious               process.

By               law,               adverse               information               stays               on               your               credit               report               for               seven               years;               adverse               public               record               information               such               as               bankruptcy,               judgments               and               deliquent               tax               records               will               likely               follow               you               for               ten               years               but               there               are               options               that               may               help.
               You               are               entitled               to               dispute               any               bad               or               outdated               information               and               ask               that               it               be               removed               or               updated,               for               example               to               show               when               a               debt               was               paid               in               full               regardless               of               its               bad               payment               history.

This               is               a               simple               process               and               you               should               receive               instructions               with               your               report.

Once               you               file               a               simple               dispute               -               it               can               be               one               sentence,               such               as               "This               is               not               my               debt",               it               then               becomes               up               to               the               credit               bureau               to               do               an               investigation               and               verify               that               the               information               is               correct.

They               usually               have               to               do               this               within               thirty               days.

Aside               from               obvious               errors               where               a               bad               debt               clearly               belongs               to               a               different               Joe               Smith               with               a               different               social               security               number               or               who               owes               the               electric               company               a               fortune               in               a               state               you've               never               even               been               to,               it               is               sometimes               possible               to               even               get               valid               information               removed.

Since               many               debts               are               sold               and               resold,               the               verification               may               just               not               make               it               back               to               the               bureau               within               the               month               and               the               bad               marks               may               have               to               be               removed               (be               aware,               though               that               the               same               information               may               be               reported               again               in               the               future).
               If               you               are               unable               to               have               an               item               or               items               removed               through               this               process,               you               are               always               allowed               to               add               an               explanation               to               your               file               in               your               own               words.

This               won't               help               raise               your               score,               but               it               can               make               a               difference               to               someone               who               really               does               want               to               extend               you               the               credit               or               job               offer.

If               you               suffered               some               serious               setback               such               as               a               divorce,               serious               illness               or               period               of               unemployment               and               simply               couldn't               make               your               payments               on               time               (and               are               now               on               more               solid               ground),               it               never               hurts               to               put               a               brief               note               in               your               file               in               your               own               defense.

Failing               all               else,               you               can               just               note               in               your               file               that               you               disagree               with               an               entry.

In               some               cases,               this               will               at               least               prompt               a               prospective               landlord               or               creditor               to               ask               you               for               your               side               of               the               story.

The               ultimate               goal               is               to               have               your               credit               report               reflect               as               well               as               possible               on               you               since               it               is               such               an               important               part               of               everyday               life.
